Check out my comprehensive list of the best CrossFit shoes here. Or, read below to learn about your options from Asics.
Everyone is a sucker for a good story. And, Asics doesn’t disappoint. If you’re an entrepreneur you’ll be interested to read what I found on their website…
In 1949, Mr. Kihachiro Onitsuka began his athletic footwear company (Onitsuka Co., Ltd.) by manufacturing basketball shoes out of his living room in Kobe, Japan. He chose the name ASICS for his company in 1977, based on a famous Latin phrase “Anima Sana In Corpore Sano”, which when translated expresses the ancient ideal of “A Sound Mind in a Sound Body.” Taking the acronym of this phrase, ASICS was founded on the belief that the best way to create a healthy and happy lifestyle is to promote total health and fitness.
ASICS products were introduced to the United States in 1977
So, I’ve never been a huge Asics fan, unless you’re talking about their vintage Onitsuka line (they look super cool), but I’ve always respected the brand. For a long time they’ve enjoyed a solid reputation among runners. And, the few pairs I’ve owned I found to be high quality and a good fit. They just didn’t carry the styles or color schemes that “spoke to me”.
But, now that they’ve come out with several models aimed squarely at meeting the cross training/CrossFit market segment, they may be worth more serious consideration. I’ll let you decide for yourself. I’ve tried to put in table formate their primary offerings, first for the ladies, and then the gents.
Asics Crossfit Shoes for Women
This shoe has only earned 2 of 5 stars on Zappos. But, it also only has one review as of this writing – so it’s not quite fair to completely rule it out your consideration.
The Gel-Fit Nova is a light-weight and flexible shoe. It’s hard to discern Asic’s intent as to the specific application for this shoe. It appears to be a general cross-trainer that would be good for gym and aerobics workouts.
Due to the low number of review I’d likely pass on this option and let others test it out. Even then, I’d likely opt for the Gel-Fit Sana. It looks much cooler and the reviews are overwhelmingly positive.
This is likely one of Asic’s most minimalist shoes. It is very light weight and flexible. The three reviewers at the Asics website and 20 reviewers on Zappos provided glowing reviews, specifically enjoying the shoe’s:
- Low weight
If I was a girl, I’d like a pair of these in my closet…
If you are looking for something similar to the Reebok Nano or Inov8 F-Lite lines, this is the closest you’ll get. The Gel-Exert TR is specifically geared toward more aggressive and explosive CrossFit-style workouts. It has a 5-star rating, but that’s only from 4 reviewers.
Asics Crossfit Shoes for Men
This is a general cross-training shoe. Most users are wearing them for aggressive aerobic workouts like PX90 or Insanity. That being the case, I’d likely pass on these in favor of more CrossFit specific options such as the Gel-Fortius TR or Gel-Exert TR below.
Asics describes the Gel-Fortius TR as the must durable shoe in their training line-up, specifically geared toward the most extreme workouts. It’s a zero, or near zero, drop shoe that will provide a good foundation in your power-lifts. The two reviewers on the Asics site and the 17 reviewers on Zappos.com provided fairly positive reviews (4 out of 5 stars) specifically citing the shoes’:
- Low weight
- Lateral Support
As I mentioned when discussing the women’s version, this shoe most closely approximates the Nano from Reebok or the F-Lite Series from Inov-8. This shoes can handle aggressive workouts. Asics designed the shoe to assist athletes with their speed and agility training. If your workout calls for explosive movements this shoe is designed to give you the responsiveness and stability you’ll require.
As of this writing there are only 3 reviews (one on asicsamerica.com and two on Zappos.com). They average out at at 4.5 stars +/-. While there aren’t a ton of reviews, the one from asicsamerica.com caught my eye. I’ve provided the direct quote below…
I own a gym and am an athletic and personal trainer. I am on my feet 8-10 hours every day. The Gel-Exert shoe is durable, light weight and the most comfortable shoe I own. The low heel and flat sole is also perfect for performing squats and deadlifts. I highly recommend these shoes to anyone who wants the perfect training shoe.
You have a lot of options nowadays when it comes to Crossfit shoes. As I’ve said repeatedly in past posts, there’s really no such thing as “the best crossfit shoe”. Every foot is different and you’ll likely need to try a couple pairs before finding one that’s perfect for you.
